Northeast Ohio Expertise

Why Exterior Painting in Ohio Is Different

Northeast Ohio doesn't give exterior paint an easy life. Lake-effect snow, sub-zero wind chills, humid summers, and a freeze-thaw cycle that repeats dozens of times each winter — these conditions expose every weakness in a paint job. A coat that holds up in a mild climate can blister, peel, and fail within two seasons here.

Sterling Finish Painting has spent years refining an exterior process built specifically for Geauga County and the surrounding snowbelt. We use premium 100% acrylic latex paints with proven cold-climate flexibility, follow a thorough preparation process that addresses every failure point, and apply every coat at the right film thickness for long-term durability.

8–10 Year Lifespan

A properly prepped and painted exterior in Northeast Ohio should last 8 to 10 years. Shortcuts in prep or materials cut that in half.

Moisture Protection

Paint is your home's first line of defense against water intrusion. A failed finish lets moisture into the substrate, leading to rot, mold, and structural damage.

Curb Appeal & Home Value

A fresh exterior is one of the highest-ROI improvements you can make — whether you're staying for years or preparing to sell.

Cold-Climate Durability

We use 100% acrylic latex paints with the flexibility to expand and contract through Geauga County's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or peeling.

Siding Types We Work With

Every Surface, Done Right

Different substrates require different preparation, primers, and application methods. We have the experience to handle all of them.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl requires a clean surface, the right primer, and a paint formulated to flex with the material as temperatures change. We never apply dark colors over vinyl without confirming the manufacturer's thermal tolerance.

Wood Siding

Clapboard, shiplap, and board-and-batten all require thorough scraping, sanding, and priming of any bare wood before topcoats. We address any rot or damage before painting so the finish has a solid substrate to bond to.

Fiber Cement (HardiePlank)

Fiber cement is one of the best substrates for paint longevity — when it's prepped correctly. We follow manufacturer guidelines for priming and use high-quality exterior acrylics that bond tightly to the surface.

Brick & Masonry

Painted brick requires a masonry primer and a breathable topcoat that allows moisture vapor to escape. We assess the brick's condition and porosity before recommending a coating system.

Stucco

Stucco is porous and prone to cracking. We fill and seal cracks before applying a flexible, breathable elastomeric or acrylic coating that moves with the substrate.

Cedar & Redwood

These species contain tannins that bleed through standard primers. We use stain-blocking primers specifically formulated for cedar and redwood to prevent discoloration and ensure a clean, lasting finish.

Our Process

How We Prepare and Paint Your Exterior

01

Free On-Site Estimate

We walk the full exterior with you, assess the substrate condition, identify any areas needing repair, and provide a detailed written estimate — no surprises.

02

Pressure Washing

We pressure wash the entire exterior to remove dirt, mildew, chalking, and loose paint. A clean surface is essential for proper adhesion — we never skip this step.

03

Scraping, Sanding & Repairs

All peeling and failing paint is scraped back to a stable surface. Bare wood is sanded smooth. Caulk joints, gaps, and penetrations are re-caulked with a high-quality paintable sealant.

04

Priming

Bare wood, repaired areas, and any substrate requiring it receives the appropriate primer. Priming is not optional — it's what makes the topcoat bond and last.

05

Topcoat Application

We apply premium exterior paint in the correct number of coats at the right film build. We don't thin paint to make it go further or rush dry times between coats.

06

Final Walkthrough

We inspect every surface with you before we pack up. Touch-ups are done on the spot. We leave your property clean and your home protected.
