Door Refinishing
First Impressions, Perfected
Your front door is the first thing guests and buyers see. We strip, prep, and refinish interior and exterior doors to a smooth, durable finish that looks brand new.
The Case for Refinishing
Why Door Refinishing?
Doors take more abuse than almost any other surface in your home — constant handling, UV exposure, moisture, and temperature swings all take their toll. A worn, peeling, or faded door doesn't just look bad; it signals neglect to visitors and potential buyers alike.
Professional door refinishing restores that crisp, polished look at a fraction of the cost of replacement. Whether it's a grand front entry, a set of French doors, or every interior door in the house, Sterling Finish Painting delivers a factory-smooth finish that holds up to daily use.
Fraction of Replacement Cost
A quality entry door replacement runs $1,500–$5,000 installed. Refinishing delivers a like-new result for significantly less.
Instant Curb Appeal
A freshly refinished front door is one of the highest-ROI improvements you can make before listing a home — or just for your own enjoyment.
Protection from the Elements
A proper finish seals wood against moisture, UV, and temperature swings — the same forces that cause cracking, warping, and rot.
Factory-Smooth Results
Spray application eliminates brush marks and lap lines. The result looks like a door that just came off the factory floor.
Our Process
How We Refinish Your Doors
Assessment & Color Selection
We inspect the door's current condition, identify any repairs needed, and help you choose the right finish — paint, stain, or clear coat — and sheen level.
Removal & Protection
Hardware is removed and protected. For exterior doors, we mask surrounding trim, sidelights, and thresholds. Interior doors are removed from hinges when a spray finish is specified.
Stripping & Surface Prep
Old failing paint or finish is stripped or sanded back to a stable surface. Dings, dents, and cracks are filled and feathered smooth. The surface is cleaned and primed.
Finish Application
We apply premium paint or stain in multiple thin coats, allowing proper dry time between each. Spray application is used wherever possible for a smooth, brush-mark-free result.
Hardware Reinstallation
All hardware is reinstalled, hinges are adjusted for proper swing and latch, and we do a final inspection to make sure everything is perfect before we leave.
Wood Types We Work With
Any Door, Any Wood
We refinish doors in all common wood species and composite materials found in Northeast Ohio homes.
Oak
The most common wood door species in Geauga County homes. Takes stain beautifully and paints to a smooth, durable finish.
Mahogany
Found in many higher-end entry doors. Rich grain that responds exceptionally well to clear coat and oil-based stains.
Pine & Fir
Common in older homes and interior doors. Requires careful prep and a quality primer to prevent bleed-through and grain raise.
Fiberglass (Wood-Grain)
Modern entry doors that mimic wood grain. We use specialty stains and topcoats formulated for fiberglass substrates.
Steel & Composite
Smooth or textured steel doors respond well to direct-to-metal primers and premium exterior enamels for a long-lasting finish.
Walnut & Cherry
Premium hardwoods found in custom millwork and high-end interior doors. We match existing stain tones or help you choose a new direction.
Before & After
What a Difference It Makes
Door refinishing is one of the most dramatic single-day transformations we offer. Here's what our clients typically experience.
Before
Peeling, faded front door with visible bare wood and failing caulk around the frame
After
Crisp, smooth finish in a fresh color with re-caulked frame and polished hardware — looks brand new
Example 1
Before
Honey oak interior doors throughout the home — dated look that clashes with updated flooring and trim
After
Painted in a soft white or warm gray that ties the whole interior together and modernizes the space
Example 2
Before
Fiberglass entry door with faded factory stain and chalky, dull appearance
After
Restained in a rich mahogany tone with a fresh clear topcoat — looks like a custom wood door
